Farm Site
Athreya Organic Farms is situated within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) – just 100 km from Mumbai city and 80 km from Navi Mumbai. The farm is located in Shahpur, Thane and is within a 3 hour drive from the city. Our site is spread across 15 acres, also comprising natural habitats for local wildlife with woodlands and streams, integrating sustainability with everything we do here at Athreya Organics!
Sustainability ingrained
Being a 21st century farm, Sustainability is at the core of all that we do at Athreya Organics! Athreya believes the least we can do is respect and provide Nature with Her undisturbed space. As part of these ecosystem services, we have developed mini-habitats throughout the site to ensure local wildlife have a place to stay – these include Deciduous woodlands, hedgerows and streams.
We incorporate Sustainability into our farming practices as well! Only farmyard manures, composts and organic extracts are used to feed our crops and control pests & diseases. While prepping the land for farming, we practice surface tillage only, to prevent damage inflicted on soil structure by deep ploughing.
During the fallow season, our fields are not barren, rather we grow Cover Crops to rejuvenate our soil, maintain its structure, keep it healthy, and prevent erosion. And when its time to grow the next crop, we simply incorporate these Cover Crops back into the soil to increase fertility naturally.
All these practices help encourage a high population of beneficial insects thereby reducing the pest burden.
Smart Farm
At Athreya Organics we aim to incorporate several tools for Precision Agriculture :
Nutrient profiling through hyperspectral imaging helps identify their exact concentration and distribution in the soil, making it easier for targeted applications of manures and organic fertilisers, preventing wastage and reducing costs. Increasing OM content by incorporating crop residues helps build up soil flora and fauna laying the foundations of Organic Farming. Canopy imaging and IoT sensors help identify crop stress (biological and physiological) and disease incidence ahead of time, dictating mitigation strategies. Drip Irrigation helps deliver water directly to crop rooting zone, when they need it, significantly reducing water wastage and evaporative losses. Of course all of this is entirely dependent on the local weather, which we montior through automatic weather stations (AWS). Along with Athreya’s expertise in forecasting, this helps us manage the farm and design a decision support systems for our crops with real time inputs.

I started Athreya Organic Farms with the goal of sharing the best tasting food with you! Having personally grown a large variety of fruit and veg from my childhood days, I was shocked to experience how different they were in every possible aspect to what we buy in our markets today. Through the years, I’ve learnt that if you nurture the soil and crops, Nature will return your love multifold.
